Just days after the premiere of season one, Netflix answered our prayers and renewed Foreverfor a second season. And now—exactly one year after the series dropped on Netflix—the streamer announced that production is officially underway.
On May 8, Netflix released an official photo of stars Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. on the Forever set in Los Angeles together. The caption: “Tell the group chat we backkk 🗣️ FOREVER Season 2 is now in production.”
The series first arrived on the streaming site on May 8, 2025, and was met with rave reviews from fans, with many applauding the show for championing a Black love story that “isn’t focused on Black struggle and trauma.”
Based on Judy Blume’s 1975 novel of the same title, the drama follows two Black teenagers, Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone) and Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.), who fall madly in love after reuniting. As they explore their own identities, the young lovers learn just how deeply their first love will affect the rest of their lives.
Following its release, fans flocked to social media demanding a second season so that we can see what becomes of Keisha and Justin. And, just six days after the show's release, Netflix gave the people what they wanted!
Read on for everything we know about Forever season 2, including a potential release date, what we’d love to see happen, and the latest news.
Will there be a Forever season 2?
Yes, there will be, and Netflix confirmed the news on May 14, 2025.
Forever creator Mara Brock Akil previously teased that there was more to the story.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said, “There's absolutely room for that. In this art form, I don’t make it for myself. I'm making it for an audience.”
She added, “I believe that the audience wants character-driven, complex love stories. If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it.”
When will Forever season 2 come out?
It's too early to say when the second season will appear on Netflix, since filming has only just started on season 2, but we’ll keep you updated right here once we have a release date.
Who is in the Forever season 2 cast?
Both Lovie and Michael confirmed to Us Weekly last year that they’d be keen to film a second season, so it’s no surprise to see them both back on our screens.
“I would love to see what [Keisha] turns into. I would love to see what she would teach me,” Lovie said, while Michael added, “We never know. But that’s something that I’m hopeful for his journey to go that way. So we’ll see.”
Per Deadline, additional cast members from the first season will be returning as well, including Karen Pittman as Justin’s mother, Dawn, Wood Harris as Justin’s father, Eric, and Xosha Roquemore as Keisha’s mother, Shelly.
Joining season 2 as a new series regular is actor Malaika Guttoh (who will play Ameena), while new recurring guest stars include Avery Wills Jr. as Jaden and Tre McBride as Elijah.
What will season 2 of Forever be about?
Season one was based on Judy Blume’s 1975 novel, which is a standalone story, so the show ends exactly where the book ends. Despite their love for one another, Keisha and Justin mutually decided to break up to focus on their lives.
“If it weren’t for you, I’d still be locked in a life that wasn’t mine. Maybe we’ll be ready for each other in 10 years,” Justin said.
According to the official Netflix logline, season 2 will pick up “four years later,” following Justin and Keisha as they pursue Justin and Keisha are doing pretty well post-pandemic—new relationships, real jobs, and adulting their big dreams—that is…until they run into each other in summer 2023.”
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Mara Brock Akil shared a few more details with Tudum, saying, “Season 2 of Forever is in production, and we are home—back in Los Angeles, back inside a love story that keeps revealing itself. This time, through friendship.”
